Companies to launch biofuel bunkering project at Port of Tokyo

In Japan, Safety4Sea reported that Japanese firm Cosmo Oil announced a ship-to-ship biofuel bunkering project with NX Shoji at the Port of Tokyo.

The initiative, set to begin this autumn, is part of the “Project to Promote Commercialization of Decarbonized Fuels,” a joint effort between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Service Corporation, aimed at supporting biofuel development.

Cosmo Energy Holdings, stated that the project will offer B24 biofuel blends, based on fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), to vessels calling at Tokyo Port. NX Shoji will oversee the biofuel supply chain, blending fuel oil with FAME to produce the B24 biofuel, while NYK will supply the fuel oil component, according to the report.

With the support of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this project seeks to advance the commercialization and use of biofuels in shipping and to help revitalize related industries, it added.
